whatcha readin'? 2020 {book 11::goal 30}

May 4, 2020 Arlene Giddings

I have had a stack of books
by my “reading chair”
for a long time now.

And for a while, it just kept growing,
never shrinking.
But since COVID-19, I have been
just picking up the next book
in the pile
and reading it next.

And the pile is shrinking…
(not gonna lie, that makes me a little anxious…
I’m a bit of a hoarder).

The Farm
was the next on the list.
I had no clue what it was about.
It was interesting….I didn’t mind it…
I wanted to see what happened.
It felt a little like a “handmaid’s tale”
set in today’s time
and less forced…but equally disturbing.

(and it’s funny, I realized I had actually taken
a photo of this book while documenting
that I actually drink tea
and not just diet coke…heehee)

whatcha readin'? 2020 {book 10::goal 30}

April 27, 2020 Arlene Giddings

I think I remember there being a lot
of hype around this book
when it first came out.

And rightly so.

This book grabbed me right away.
Written from the point of view
of a 5 year old little girl
who is camping with her parents & little brother
when a bear attacks their campsite
and how she deals with everything that ensues,
it is both riveting and hard to read in places…
she captures the point of view and voice
of a 5 year old very well…

I pretty much read the book in 2 days…
it was so hard to put down.

solitude...silence...sunshine...

April 25, 2020 Arlene Giddings

I had big plans to get out of the house today…
there was sunshine and blue sky.
I got up early and did the big house things -
cleaned out the freezer,
split up the meat I bought to freeze it
in smaller portions
because I am trying to finally start cooking
for 1 to 2 instead of 4….

I was planning to go for a long drive,
maybe stop for a hike…
bring myself some snacks,
take the camera,
a playlist…
maybe stop somewhere quick and
pick up a rake.

But…when I got in the car,
it wouldn’t start.
Google tells me it might be the solenoid in the starter…
blah.

So instead of a long drive or a new rake,
I curled up in a chair by the window
and read a book while eating oreos….
so…almost as good.

Honestly, the silence and the solitude
are starting to wear on me a little tiny bit.

I think I will spend the rest of the evening
letting myself feel a little bit sad…
catching up on this show that I love,
and maybe grey’s anatomy and
I started this last night and thought I would not like it…
but was SO pleasantly surprised.
The first episode made me laugh AND cry last night.

and this….this also made me cry a little bit…heehee…so sweet

whatcha readin'? 2020 {book 9::goal 30}

April 20, 2020 Arlene Giddings

this was a book
i came across in a book sale
and picked it up
without reading
the back of it
as i was drawn
immediately
to the cover
and the title
which
sounded like poetry
to me.

and i was not disappointed.

this story kept me riveted
right from the beginning…
i fell in love with the characters…
and it made me think
about memory and the huge part
it plays in our lives…

i’m happy i took a chance on this one.
