whatcha readin'? {2017::book 5 - goal 24}

July 17, 2017 Arlene Giddings

i like biographies and memoirs.
i used to like drew barrymore.
(i have to say
i have since watched
"santa clarita diet"
and lost a little something there...
and drew's acting nearly made me
want to claw my skin off...)

but
this is not about that show
and not about how i barely made it
through the first episode
and how i was puzzled
the whole way through the 1st episode by
the plot...the acting...the writing...
wow.

so anyway.
wildflower was a pretty good book.
amusing and interesting...
but the kind of book
you are kind of glad you borrowed
cause if you had paid for it,
you might be kicking yourself a little.

wow.
i hope drew barrymore never reads this.
i don't mean to sound so...mean.
it's monday...it's really hot still...and i'm ready for bed
so slightly cranky/sulky...

if you are reading this, drew barrymore,
please know that i loved you in the wedding singer
and adored you in boys on the side...
so...we good?

updated to add:  i just read some reviews of
Santa Clarita Diet and a lot of them say
the show gets better as it goes...
so maybe, just maybe, i'm wrong on this one.
anyone else watch it & want to sway me one way or the other?

whatcha readin'? {2017::book 3 - goal 24}

June 5, 2017 Arlene Giddings

i love alice hoffman's books....
and i really enjoyed this one.
i can't say that i loved it...
i'm not sure why.
i feel like i didn't really like the main character
and that is always an issue for me
when it comes to whether or not
i really sink into a book.

but i do love her writing style
so that's always enough to carry me through.
:)

whatcha readin'? {2017::book 2 - goal 24}

April 10, 2017 Arlene Giddings

this is obviously not the
first time
that i have read
anne of green gables.

it's probably not even the 20th or the 40th
or the 80th time....
i used to read it over and over
as a kid...
out loud...in different voices...
to the kids...
by myself...
it was one of my most favorite books.

and every time i read it,
i enjoy it just as much.
it's like coming home.
it reminds me of laying upside down
on the arm chair in our living room
reading and eating apples
on lazy hot summer days...

or on the roof, hiding from my brothers,
hot sun, sticky black shingles...
moving careful so you don't burn
your bare feet,
radio playing out the bedroom window.

i am planning to read everything by lm montgomery eventually
as part of my 50 before fifty list...
i probably won't write a lot about them here...

ps...i'm watching the new series too...
i'm a little torn on that one.
megan follows will always be anne
but this little girl definitely plays her fantastically...

it's the changes in the story i'm struggling with.

i'm not so good with change...i can admit it.
:)

whatcha readin'? {book 1::goal 24}

February 20, 2017 Arlene Giddings

the first book i read for 2017
was boys in the trees
by carly simon...
which is kind of weird for me
because i wouldn't consider myself
a carly simon fan...
not that i dislike her...
i just don't really know much about her.

i like the song "you're so vain".

that's about all i knew going into this.

i didn't even know she had been married to james taylor
(another person i know nothing about
and have never really listened to...)

and i definitely did not know that her father
was the simon in simon and schuster.

but i am a sucker for memoirs.
i always have been.
and this one did not disappoint.

her writing was both beautiful and sad...
i think the honesty was what broke my heart
when she wrote about her marriage.

in the end, i was happy that i chose this book to
start off my 2017 reading adventure....
:)

whatcha readin'? {it's a brand new year}

February 6, 2017 Arlene Giddings

as i apparently have no photos of books on hand, here is a photo of a fairy tale looking forest that makes me think about something i would read in a book.  :)

i went into 2016 with a goal of reading 12 books.

the year before
i had only read 8.

8 books.

me.

8 books...in a WHOLE year.
my face is still burning with embarrassment.

so i had set the bar low for 2016
(but not as low as EIGHT for crying out loud)
and set it at 12...
i read 18 in total, so yay me!

considering i have no weddings this year,
i am raising the goal to 24 (and hoping to exceed).
one down already!
off to a good start, heeheehee.

on a related topic,
i am trying to complete some of my 50 before 50 list
(because you know...50 is coming...faster than it should be, but definitely coming)
and one of the items on my list is to read everything by
LM Montgomery...including the journals.
i have already read a good number of her books
most of them many, many times
but am going to try to re-read them all anyway...
i have never read the journals so i'm looking forward to that, too.
(first i have to find them...i don't really want to buy them all...
but may have to).

Also open to book suggestions for this year....fire away!
:) :) :)
