whatcha readin'? 2020 {book 7::goal 30}

March 30, 2020 Arlene Giddings

I absolutely loved this book.

It was the perfect escape.
It made me laugh…and think…and cry just a little bit
both sad & happy tears.

I fell in love with all the characters.
I felt like I could only describe it using words like
lovely and
delightful
which are not my usual words…haha.

I did not want it to end…I want to go to Guernsey…
I want to meet everyone…
I just don’t really want to try potato peel pie…
:)

Note: I was excited to watch the movie which I have seen
floating by on Netflix but I am not sure it
will make me as happy as the book did….

whatcha readin'? 2020 {book 6::goal 30}

March 23, 2020 Arlene Giddings

I really wanted to love this book.

But, I guess, maybe it’s enough
to say that I didn’t
hate it.

It was ok.

Well. Actually….
the notes I wrote on it
as I was reading it were:
a little slow going and kind of
condescending…
haughty…
reserved…
irritating.

I didn’t warm up to any of characters,
I didn’t really get a chance to feel
like I knew any of them really…

But, as I thought about it after,
I thought maybe that’s the tone
the author was going for…
because it is sort of related to
jane austen after all…
so maybe she was looking for a mix
between formal & informal,
then and now…
for me, it just didn’t really work.

I am going to to give the movie a shot though.
I adore emily blunt and, well,
the movie looks really cute & fun…
and less haughty and reserved.

whatcha readin'? 2020 {book 5::goal 30}

March 16, 2020 Arlene Giddings

When I started this book
I had no idea what it was about
and I had never read anything by this author before.

But I was drawn in immediately.
The mix of old and new,
yesterday and today,
the connections and the tensions,
the love lost and found.

Very much worth the read.
I don’t want to say too much about it
and give anything away but I will
tell you I gave it 5 hearts.
:)

whatcha readin'? 2020 {book 4::goal 30}

March 9, 2020 Arlene Giddings

I randomly picked up this book
at a book sale
mainly just because of the cover.

(I’m superficial like that
when it comes to books…
don’t judge me.)

I didn’t realize until the end
that Beryl Markham is a real person,
that she has a memoir that now I want to read,
and that Karen Blixen was Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesan) from Out of Africa
(which I also want to read…and watch the movie).

Anyway…it was a great book.
I am not sure why I am suddenly reading
so many books about female aviators
without even trying…
maybe the universe is trying to tell me
to get my pilot license!! :)

Anywayyyyy….
she was totally fascinating…strong and independent…
I liked her.

and I liked this quote…it hit home for me:
”sometimes when you are hurting, it helps to throw
yourself at something that will take your weight”.

whatcha readin'? 2020 {book 3::goal 30}

March 2, 2020 Arlene Giddings

I know I say this all the time
about Philippa Gregory…
that she is a guilty pleasure of mine,
that I am always a little shy to say
how much I like her writing…
but…I really, really do.

And this book did not disappoint…
not me anyway.
I have seen some poor reviews for it
but I enjoyed it as much as I didn’t like
(despised) James…
I loved the descriptions of the marshy tidelands,
the primitiveness, the barren landscape,
I was on the edge of my seat at one point and
the writing took me away.

And I was very excited to learn that this is
actually the first in a series of books!
I am looking forward to more!
