whatcha readin'? {2016::book 9 - goal 12}

May 16, 2016 Arlene Giddings

i knew immediately
that this was going to be the type of book
that i did not want to end...
ever.

i love, love, loved this book.
i was drawn in from page one and
could not put it down...
and i mean to the point that
i had it on my phone
and i read it as i walked back
and forth to work.

i knew right from page one that
i was going to be sad to see it end.
i loved the characters...
Handful/Hetty, Sarah, Mauma - not Missus though -
i hated her.

i loved getting a glimpse into Sarah's mind,
into how torn she was,
and how confusing and hard it must have been
to not believe in slavery
while growing up in a family that did.

i love Sue Monk Kidd's style of writing...
she captures voices in a way that makes you feel
like you know them, like you get them.
i didn't realize until almost the very end
that this was based on actual people, Sarah and Angelina Grimke

i made a note while reading this that said
"must read everything by this author"
but i realize now that i have already read a good majority
of what she has written.
i loved the mermaid chair and the secret life of bees...
i just wish there was more of her books to read.
i'll be watching for the next one!

all the things i didn't do...

May 14, 2016 Arlene Giddings

i had big plans when i got up this morning.
plans that involved
tackling the mountain of laundry
and cooking healthy food...
washing up a sink full of dirty dishes
and whipping the house
into a clean, uncluttered home.

none of that happened.

instead,
i found myself at my desk with pen & paper & plans of a different sort.
i went on a successful search for blackberry ginger ale...

i read blogs and pinned miniature doll house furniture on pinterest...
and then the rain stopped,
so i put on my polka dot rain-boots

and went hunting for
raindrops...

i found gnomes and budding bleeding hearts
and hostas pushing through wet earth...

real hostas this time...
not tulips like the last time.

and now,
i am going to curl up on the couch
for movie night with S
and drink blackberry gingerale floats...
i love saturdays.

May 13, 2016 Arlene Giddings

☺ with my robot shoes...I know I have had these for a while
but I never really had the chance to share them here...
because I only had phone-photos and I felt they needed
big-camera pictures...not needed...deserved :)  I would suggest
that you check out their site, but...if you are like me,
you will want EVERY shoe there.

i have always loved music...
i can't sing a note
and i know it
(but that doesn't stop me from
singing unreasonably loud in my house
and in my car, as my family will attest to).

this was my parent's stereo
but i always think of it more as being my dad's...
his records...his 8 tracks...
i'm not sure why i always think of it that way...
maybe it's because there is no
elvis
in the mix...or the beatles...which would have
indicated that my mom
had some say in the selection...

but instead
there was ferlin husky and george jones,
charley pride and loretta lynn,
tammy wynette, george campbell and
lots and lots of truck driving songs.

and, oddly enough, in that motley collection of 8 tracks
that i am pretty sure someone gave him
a mixed box of...
there was dr hook's greatest hits
and billy joel's glass houses...
which became my favorite soundtracks while
washing the dishes.

dad had a little rca tape recorder, too,
that we were only allowed to take out
on very special occasions...
and this was where i found my first
favorite desert-island-disc song on a tape called tear jerkers...

leader of the pack.

i loved the whole tape...(i was 6 or 7 years old)...
but that song shaped a little bit of who i am now, i think...

i always loved songs that told a story
and i think my dad's music collection had a lot to do with that...
jolene
coat of many colors
jenny's afraid of the dark
teddy bear
the gambler

all stories...
Probably not much of a coincidence, after all...I assume most music was like that back then.  But it still feels significant to who I am now.  Funny how a photo of headphones makes you think.
