whatcha readin'? (goal 48 - book 14)

June 15, 2026 Arlene Giddings

I read Writers & Lovers in May.
๐Ÿฉต๐Ÿฉต๐Ÿฉต๐Ÿฉต๐Ÿฉตout of 5 ๐Ÿฉตโ€™s

This was one of those
"got pulled in by the cover"
"found at a book sale randomly"
kind of deals but I am so glad I did.

I have had Lily King on my list
of โ€œshould readโ€ for a long time
and it was well worth the hype.
It was a little hard to read because
her loss made me think of my own
and maybe it felt a little too soon
but if I avoided all books that
touch on loss, the pickings would be slim.

And sometimes, reading about something
can unleash your own wordsโ€ฆ
and they may have never come out otherwise.

words escaped like:

read this book curled up
in the swing
by the setting sun,
gingham b&w ruffled pjs,
bare feet,
loving the bookโ€ฆso loving the book.

and also

โ€ฆI cried because I was so happy for her
(redacted why - spoiler alert)โ€ฆ
and partly because I was still so sad
for both of us -
motherless daughters now
watching for the geese to go
but waiting so much harder
for them to come back
and my heart broke open
a little bit
and my words rushed out
in a gush,
in a torrent,
full of happiness and regret and loss
and love.

And I love when a book makes me want to pick up a pen.

the sweetness of sundays & the start of the wayfinders club...

June 14, 2026 Arlene Giddings

I feel like I have not been hereโ€ฆ
I have been posting a lot in video form
mostly over on Instagram
and my Facebook photography pageโ€ฆ
this is what I do.
I get excited, I get ideas,
I spin my wheels
and spread myself too thin
in some places
and pour myself too thick in others.
I neglect one
while I barrage another.

the last of my lovely lilacsโ€ฆ

I shared a video post over on FB/insta
about this already but wanted to share it hereโ€ฆ
I saw a tiktok about a girl who was
going to do a โ€œgirl guidesโ€ kinda summer
with her friendsโ€ฆbadges and all.

And, of course, I thought
OH! I WANT TO DO THAT.

Now I knew that I would neither create
or sew badges onto anything within a reasonable
amount of time because
if you know me,
you know that my ideas burn out quickly
if I am able to over think themโ€ฆ
I know my flaws. Mostly.
(though sometimes I am a little delusional about them).

Anyway, I coerced a bestie into joining
my club of two (but willing to open it to more
if interested in our mania)โ€ฆ
imagine my surprise when I found out
I could create a CUSTOMIZED journal
from Amazon! My plan is that we will
use the journals as โ€œfield journalsโ€ to record
our lists and goals,
add stickers for achievements (an easy alternative
to badges)(plus who doesnโ€™t LOVE stickers?!)

Here is the journal (**squealllll!!!!)

The Wayfinders Club.
I think we are all trying to
find our wayโ€ฆ
back to ourselves, back from grief,
back to joy and friendships and exploration and adventures.

I was seriously SO HAPPY with
how this turned out.

This is the back of the bookโ€ฆ
I wish this graphic was a little smaller
and more centered but
whatever.
I still love it.

So now I have a TON of stickers
coming sometime this week
but todayโ€ฆ
I got this!!!

And I am SUPER DUPER EXCITED.
I have always wanted one of these but
struggled to pull the trigger and make a decision.
But I did. And I love it!
This feels like a game changer
for my journals and
for the Wayfinder project!

So I will half-heartily apologize now
for the amount of posts you will
likely see about thisโ€ฆ
but I figure if you follow me
on one platform or another,
then you are probably ok with that
because itโ€™s a choice.
(And did I tell you how frigging GRATEFUL
I am that you DO choose to follow meโ€ฆ๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿฉท)

My family on the hand probably feels like
they *have to follow meโ€ฆheeheehee

I hope you had a fantastic weekend
and hereโ€™s a little sunshine for you! ๐ŸŒž

whatcha readin'? {goal 48 - book 13} ๐Ÿ“–

June 8, 2026 Arlene Giddings

This one is definitely a re-read for me.
I have read all of these books so many times
over the years, I have completely lost count.

I devoured this one weekend when I thought
I screwed up my back againโ€ฆ
so I lost myself in the land of Anne.
Picnics, antics of Davey & Dora,
big decisions, amusing predicaments
and, of course, Gilbert. โ™ฅ

I will never not love these books.
They transport me immediately
to my childhood, to laying upside down
on an arm chair,
eating apples,
with nothing else to do
except read all day long.

My dad once told me that
one of his favorite memories
was that when I was a kid,
I would come out to the shed
where he worked, way before the big garageโ€ฆ
but the shed where he worked on
snowmobiles and dirt bikes,
built windmills and ice boatsโ€ฆ
and I would sit silently on the steps to the loft
and read while he worked,
neither of us talking
but it was just enough
to be in close proximity of him.

I think of that
and I think of him remembering that
and it gives me a
glowworm in my heart.
I was loved. I loved and was loved.
They might not be here nowโ€ฆ
but that love remains.

I got sidetracked. Sorry, Lucy Maud. ๐Ÿคญ

โ€œI like to fancy souls as being made of light. And some are all shot through with rosy stains and quiversโ€ฆand some have a soft glitter like moonlight on the seaโ€ฆand some are pale and transparent like mist at dawnโ€ฆโ€

This makes me happy now in a way
I would have not understood when I was a kid
or even 5 years ago.
But I understand it now.

Also not to make this way too long
but can we just take a second to
admire these BEAUTIFUL FRIGGING COVERS?
This series is done by Ellie McKay
and I am in love and going to get the whole series.
These are definitely keepers for me.

๐Ÿš€whatcha readin'? {goal 48 - book 12} ๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿš€

May 25, 2026 Arlene Giddings

I actually read 3 books so far in May
but I am choosing to only talk about this one
today
because I loved it so much
AND because it pushed me into a black hole spiral
of weird hyper fixation that
books will sometimes do to me.

The book is Project Hail Mary (Andy Weir).

I opened the book on my lunch at work
and there was a diagram of a rocket ship
with words like centrifuge and thrust and spin drives
and I felt myself shifting
into the โ€œthis must become a projectโ€ mode of my brain.

This is not a mode I can plan or control.
Or explain. Or deny.

So I fully enjoyed reading the book.
I love the characters & relationship between Ryland & Rocky.
The humor. The frustrations. The problem solving.
The plot twists I did not see coming.

And I cannot wait to see the movie
(have I had a small but large crush on Ryan Gosling
ever since the Notebook and Crazy Stupid Loveโ€ฆyes.)

While reading the book, I drew random aliens
and space ships, watched videos for kids on the solar system,
and looked up words I didnโ€™t know the meaning of.

AND IT WAS SO FUN.

wanna know SOME SPACE FACTS?
๐Ÿš€Mars has blue sunsets
๐Ÿ‘ฝVenus spins backwards
๐Ÿš€The sun is actually a star made of hydrogen & helium
๐Ÿ‘ฝOne year on Neptune = 165 years on earth
I can keep going.
But Iโ€™ll spare you. ๐Ÿคญ
I rated this book 5/5 ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿš€๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿš€๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿš€๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿš€๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿš€
