whatcha readin'? {goal 41::book 10}

September 9, 2024 Arlene Giddings

I am suprised that i have
not read this book
before now.

But I hadn't.

I picked it up now
because of a book group
that I am in
(who decided partway through
that they no longer wanted to read
that particular book
but I finished it anyway).

It was not an easy read.
But well worth reading.
The characters stick with you
for days and days
long after the book has been
closed and put away….

whatcha readin - 2023 {goal 40 - book 2 and 3...kinda}

March 13, 2023 Arlene Giddings

Not gonna lie
so far 2023 has been a rough year
for me
as far as reading goes.

First I struggled with the
extremely annoying not scary at all
Frankenstein.

And then I just couldn’t seem to settle.
It’s just been slow going…
I blame my daughter and that we
started watching Sons of Anarchy and
even though I say JUST ONE
every night,
it is never
JUST ONE.

(and Jax. I blame the cuteness of Jax. Heh)

So anywayyyyyyyyyyyyy,
I read The House in the Pines
but for the moment my opinion must
remain classified information
because I read it as part of a
very small teeny tiny book club
and I don’t want to give anything away.

So instead, we’ll skip to
The Art of Racing in the Rain
which so many people told me to read and
raved about it and I was dubious
cause it was the story from the point of view
of a dog
and I was kinda like well….I mean….
how good could that be?

So frigging good.

Note I wrote while reading this book:
"For a little bit I kinda hated this story
because it was so good
and broke my heart so much.”

So there you go.
Those who told me to read this were right to do so.
And now I have become one of those people
telling YOU go read it.
(and I have a copy to trade or sell if you want)
:)

sunday, sunday...

November 1, 2020 Arlene Giddings

where have i been?

i have been asking myself that same question.
during summer,
i usually let things slide
over here in the land of
geekiness
but this year,
it seemed to slide right into fall.

when that happens,
i try not to panic.
i think maybe it’s just my brains way
of saying to take a rest
and let yourself be inspired instead,
a gentle reminder to
fill your well - it’s getting empty.

i did take a lot more photos
this summer & fall then i have
in a long time
so that was a nice change.

i also finally went to a book club that
i have been a part of for a long time…
and the book we are doing is the Artist’s Way
which made me very happy.

i have done the book before but
it was years ago and on my own.
this is a fun, different way to do it…
i like being held accountable to some degree
and it’s been interesting to get other views on it
and ideas plus i love the thought of making
connections with other people
outside your own circle…
i kinda think
that’s where the synchronicity seeds can start being planted.

happy sunday! :)

whatcha readin'? 2019 {book 16::goal 25}

October 7, 2019 Arlene Giddings

I don’t even know where or how I heard of this book…
but I am sooooo glad that I did.

I loved this book.
The intricate threads tying each person together
in ways I didn’t expect,
the backstory,
the reasoning behind the reasons…

But Kate & Peter’s story…well….
Kate’s story…
the creeping realization, the gradual descent into…
the delayed reactions and then the subsequent
futile motions of trying to figure out where it all
went wrong, of how to fix it, to apply rational logic
to something that defies logic & is completely
out of your control…
well.

That made me cry.

Because I saw myself in that.
I saw me.
As clear and as sharp as looking in a mirror.
I saw me.

So my opinion on this book may be a little biased
because of that….I suspect you are either drawn to
or run away screaming from
what you recognize in yourself….depending on the day.

On this day, it felt good to be understood,
if only by a fictional character in a book with a name
I can never seem to remember.

Also, I wrote this note after reading it:

“The only secret to love is to be kind” found in the acknowledgements.

whatcha readin'? 2019 {book 13::goal 25}

September 10, 2019 Arlene Giddings

here’s a secret
that’s not really a secret…
i love fairy tales.

and this felt like a fairy tale to me.

a little girl lost and abandoned,
secrets kept and whispered and wondered about…
a mystery,
a book of fairy tales,
a hidden garden, walled away from the rest of the world…

oh, i loved this book.

i will warn you though…i had to make notes at one point
of who was who and how this person knew that person
and so on and so forth. :)
