whatcha readin'? {2016::book 10 - goal 12}

May 23, 2016 Arlene Giddings

ok....before I can say anything
about this book
I have to say...
she is adorable.

a-dor-able.

so quirky & cute & funny
and she totally gets off track in interviews
(which is a trait that I can completely relate to...
except not really in interviews
because, well, I'm not famous,
but in every day life conversations
and during what other people would easily consider
to be making small talk...)

and I loved this book.
I really knew nothing about felicia day
when I started reading this
so it was all a pleasant surprise to me...
I have since starting watching The Guild
and her interviews and may
have tried to find her home number and
address...you know, just to say hi...
and oh-my-gawd-you GET me!
(and i'm only slightly kidding...heh)

any book that appears to have
EMBRACE YOUR WEIRDNESS
as its main theme
is obviously right up the alley
of a girl who was always called weird
(and, for the record, it only stopped kinda hurting
to be called weird
when you decide to take it as a
compliment instead of an insult)

plus I made a list of things
that I really seemed to identify with her on:

  1. Anne of Green Gables:: how awesome is that! and she wanted to move to PEI!?!  C'mon over, it's never too late!  you can stay with us! :)  (i know, i know...the stalker vibe again)
  2. She talked about a period of "who am I when The Guild ends" and I feel like I have been going through a bit of that myself with the end of the weddings...not on the same level (again...I am not famous), but still, identifiable.
  3. She also refers to herself as neurotic a lot.  Which made me think...wait...am I neurotic because I relate to so much of this?  Is that neurotic for me to think that?  I need to go google neurotic.

5 out of 5 ♥♥♥♥♥'s

friday i'm in love...(the long weekend edition)

May 20, 2016 Arlene Giddings

♥  with long, extra long weekends...mine started on thursday
with a trip to moncton with my girl...
which meant two things -
one:  i got to spend a full day just hanging out with emma :) :) :)
two:  i can cross "drive to moncton" off my bucket list

there were teeny tiny mushrooms and lots and lots of moss...

♥  meatball subs & cherry vanilla dr pepper with my favorite guy

♥  got up early this morning & spot cleaned the house
so that i could go out hiking
guilt free
with one of my best friends...
armed with a hand drawn map, a camera, 1 banana
and a lot of enthusiasm...
we got lost a couple of times...picked up a cute beagle
for a companion for a while,
might have wandered through a christmas tree farm...
definitely trailblazed through a golf course
and one of us peed in the woods.

someone said it's not an adventure til you get lost.
personally, i feel it's not an adventure
until someone cries
in the fetal position
but those might just be my rules.

♥  this kid singing this song...he also does hallelujah

♥  writer's block

♥  still 3 more days off to look forward to...and sunshine in the forecast!

In friday i'm in love, best friends Tags pei, nature trails, raindrops, adventure, happy

#tbt that hits me right in the heart...

May 19, 2016 Arlene Giddings

where, where, where has the time gone?

our gap toothed little blonde diehard twisted sister fan
with a mouth full of chewing gum
and heart full of sweetness,
all sassy attitude and devil horns...

our big-headed boy
with the eyes so dark brown they looked black,
pudgy hands and big chubby cheeks,
all rough and tumble
and baby talk...

it blows my mind...it seems like yesterday.

i read somewhere when the kids were little
that the
days are long,
but the years are short...
and it is so gawd damn true
it hurts my heart a little...

but they also make me so unbearably happy today
all kinda grown up and still so sweet, still so funny...
still all devil horns and rough & tumble -
{but now emma has all her teeth
and campbell doesn't fall forward
when running because his head is too heavy}.
:) :) :) :)

tuesday truths and chicken fricot...

May 17, 2016 Arlene Giddings

I don't like to cook.  Not normally.
Usually Stirling does most of the cooking
and by most...
I mean most.
If left to me, supper would generally be
sugary cereal with
more sugar added....
or toast
with butter
and brown sugar.

But I do like to make chicken fricot
or what I consider to be my version of chicken fricot.
In my non-vegetable loving world,
chicken fricot is chicken, potatoes and chicken broth...
no dumplings, no carrots, definitely no turnip...
lots of salt and pepper...and maybe, a little more salt.
Onions are ok now (not so much when I was a kid).

Chicken fricot makes me think of my grandmother's
teeny-tiny house that was always filled with kids
and where we jumped on the bed
and ate home cut french fries (if one of the boys would go
to the basement to get the potatoes)
and meat pies
and ice cream
while watching the carol burnett show
and cable tv (a luxury we did not have at home).
When my grandmother wasn't holding one of my many,
many younger cousins, she was knitting...or cooking...
or laughing...or all of these things at once.

When I make chicken fricot,
I think of her english mixed with french and vice versa.
I think about how she was the most down to earth person
I have ever known....and how, even though there were SO
many of us, she was always able to remember the little things...
when I would come over she would let me go out to my
uncle's room to read archie comics and color in peace...
she remembered what we liked, what we didn't.
And she listened when you were telling her something...
like...really listened...really heard you...
even with so much going on all the time.

So yeah, I like to make chicken fricot.
:)  It'll never be hers but it always makes me feel better.
