whatcha readin'? {goal 48 - book 13} 📖

June 8, 2026 Arlene Giddings

This one is definitely a re-read for me.
I have read all of these books so many times
over the years, I have completely lost count.

I devoured this one weekend when I thought
I screwed up my back again…
so I lost myself in the land of Anne.
Picnics, antics of Davey & Dora,
big decisions, amusing predicaments
and, of course, Gilbert. ♥

I will never not love these books.
They transport me immediately
to my childhood, to laying upside down
on an arm chair,
eating apples,
with nothing else to do
except read all day long.

My dad once told me that
one of his favorite memories
was that when I was a kid,
I would come out to the shed
where he worked, way before the big garage…
but the shed where he worked on
snowmobiles and dirt bikes,
built windmills and ice boats…
and I would sit silently on the steps to the loft
and read while he worked,
neither of us talking
but it was just enough
to be in close proximity of him.

I think of that
and I think of him remembering that
and it gives me a
glowworm in my heart.
I was loved. I loved and was loved.
They might not be here now…
but that love remains.

I got sidetracked. Sorry, Lucy Maud. 🤭

“I like to fancy souls as being made of light. And some are all shot through with rosy stains and quivers…and some have a soft glitter like moonlight on the sea…and some are pale and transparent like mist at dawn…”

This makes me happy now in a way
I would have not understood when I was a kid
or even 5 years ago.
But I understand it now.

Also not to make this way too long
but can we just take a second to
admire these BEAUTIFUL FRIGGING COVERS?
This series is done by Ellie McKay
and I am in love and going to get the whole series.
These are definitely keepers for me.

whatcha readin'? {2017::book 2 - goal 24}

April 10, 2017 Arlene Giddings

this is obviously not the
first time
that i have read
anne of green gables.

it's probably not even the 20th or the 40th
or the 80th time....
i used to read it over and over
as a kid...
out loud...in different voices...
to the kids...
by myself...
it was one of my most favorite books.

and every time i read it,
i enjoy it just as much.
it's like coming home.
it reminds me of laying upside down
on the arm chair in our living room
reading and eating apples
on lazy hot summer days...

or on the roof, hiding from my brothers,
hot sun, sticky black shingles...
moving careful so you don't burn
your bare feet,
radio playing out the bedroom window.

i am planning to read everything by lm montgomery eventually
as part of my 50 before fifty list...
i probably won't write a lot about them here...

ps...i'm watching the new series too...
i'm a little torn on that one.
megan follows will always be anne
but this little girl definitely plays her fantastically...

it's the changes in the story i'm struggling with.

i'm not so good with change...i can admit it.
:)

whatcha readin'? {it's a brand new year}

February 6, 2017 Arlene Giddings

as i apparently have no photos of books on hand, here is a photo of a fairy tale looking forest that makes me think about something i would read in a book.  :)

i went into 2016 with a goal of reading 12 books.

the year before
i had only read 8.

8 books.

me.

8 books...in a WHOLE year.
my face is still burning with embarrassment.

so i had set the bar low for 2016
(but not as low as EIGHT for crying out loud)
and set it at 12...
i read 18 in total, so yay me!

considering i have no weddings this year,
i am raising the goal to 24 (and hoping to exceed).
one down already!
off to a good start, heeheehee.

on a related topic,
i am trying to complete some of my 50 before 50 list
(because you know...50 is coming...faster than it should be, but definitely coming)
and one of the items on my list is to read everything by
LM Montgomery...including the journals.
i have already read a good number of her books
most of them many, many times
but am going to try to re-read them all anyway...
i have never read the journals so i'm looking forward to that, too.
(first i have to find them...i don't really want to buy them all...
but may have to).

Also open to book suggestions for this year....fire away!
:) :) :)

whatcha readin'? {2016::book 10 - goal 12}

May 23, 2016 Arlene Giddings

ok....before I can say anything
about this book
I have to say...
she is adorable.

a-dor-able.

so quirky & cute & funny
and she totally gets off track in interviews
(which is a trait that I can completely relate to...
except not really in interviews
because, well, I'm not famous,
but in every day life conversations
and during what other people would easily consider
to be making small talk...)

and I loved this book.
I really knew nothing about felicia day
when I started reading this
so it was all a pleasant surprise to me...
I have since starting watching The Guild
and her interviews and may
have tried to find her home number and
address...you know, just to say hi...
and oh-my-gawd-you GET me!
(and i'm only slightly kidding...heh)

any book that appears to have
EMBRACE YOUR WEIRDNESS
as its main theme
is obviously right up the alley
of a girl who was always called weird
(and, for the record, it only stopped kinda hurting
to be called weird
when you decide to take it as a
compliment instead of an insult)

plus I made a list of things
that I really seemed to identify with her on:

  1. Anne of Green Gables:: how awesome is that! and she wanted to move to PEI!?!  C'mon over, it's never too late!  you can stay with us! :)  (i know, i know...the stalker vibe again)
  2. She talked about a period of "who am I when The Guild ends" and I feel like I have been going through a bit of that myself with the end of the weddings...not on the same level (again...I am not famous), but still, identifiable.
  3. She also refers to herself as neurotic a lot.  Which made me think...wait...am I neurotic because I relate to so much of this?  Is that neurotic for me to think that?  I need to go google neurotic.

5 out of 5 ♥♥♥♥♥'s
